In a perfect world, you would draw a map, follow the line, and arrive at the treasure. But we do not live in a perfect world; we live in a messy one. In engineering, the path almost never looks like the plan. Often, reality will hit you in the face, and the machine will not work. In that moment, you have a choice: you can stick to the plan and crash, or you can change the plan. This move is called 'The Pivot.' It is the art of keeping your goal, but changing your method.
The Straight Line Fallacy
Humans love to plan. We make Gantt charts and schedules that assume everything will go right. We assume A leads to B, which leads to C. But the universe is full of variables we cannot predict—weather, shortages, accidents. A rigid engineer breaks when the plan fails. An adaptable engineer expects the plan to fail. They treat the plan as a hypothesis, not a promise. When the road is blocked, they do not stop driving; they turn the wheel.
The Lifeboat: Apollo 13
The mission of Apollo 13 was to land on the moon. That was the plan. But halfway there, an oxygen tank exploded. The moon landing was impossible. If NASA had stuck to the original plan, the astronauts would have died. Instead, they performed the ultimate pivot. They turned the Lunar Module—which was designed to land on the moon—into a lifeboat to keep the astronauts alive. They threw away the script and used the tools they had to solve the new problem: survival.
From Wall Cleaner to Toy
Sometimes, your invention works, but for the wrong reason. In the 1930s, a company made a squishy, white dough designed to clean soot off wallpaper. It was a boring cleaning product. But then, people stopped using coal to heat houses, so they didn't have soot on their walls. The product was doomed. But the inventor noticed something: children were using the cleaning dough to make sculptures. He pivoted. He took out the detergent, added almond scent and color, and called it 'Play-Doh.' The failure became a billion-dollar success.
Keep One Foot Down
A pivot is not a random jump. In basketball, when you pivot, you keep one foot planted firmly on the ground while you move the other. Engineering is the same. You keep your 'planted foot' on your core strength or your values, and you move your 'strategy foot' to a new direction. You do not abandon who you are; you just change how you apply it to the world.
